Happy Birthday from Me to You!
Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.
—Leonardo da Vinci
Dear PenPal,
To celebrate my birthday (January 9th), this weekend, my book, Hourglass Museum, is free on Kindle to download: http://bit.ly/HourglassKindle (through Sunday, January 10th)
This book was created to be a paper museum as each section is its own exhibit--from portraits to a sketchbook of nudes(poems without punctuation), these poems explore the yearning to create and the struggle of balancing regular life with art.
In September, I was honored to learn the book was one of four finalists for the Washington State Book Awards for Best Poetry Book of the Year, so my hope is there is something in this book readers are connecting with or maybe finding a little inspiration in the pages with Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte, and other artists who have make cameos throughout the book.
This year, one of my resolutions is to "give back" to our literary community, to readers, and to other poets and artists making their way in the world, and to continue to give a nod to the "Seattle Renaissance," my community of poets, writers, and artists who are doing incredible creative work in the Northwest, much of which people in other parts of the country have no idea about.
Oh, and the above photo was taken of me yesterday at the Frye Art Museum two days before my birthday by the dazzling poet Susan Rich. There is so much inspiring art around us, take a moment to spend the day with some.
Thank you for reading and for all your good work in the world.
Cheers!
xo,
Kells
