Dear Penpal,
It's that time again when fall arrives and many of us find ourselves moving indoors. Sometimes we have a little more time to write, sometimes a little more melancholy, sometimes a little Apple Brown Betty, and sometimes all three.
For me, September officially begins my writing year and October takes me into the season of poetry and going deep into my work. I hope you find a moment (or two, or three) to go deep into yours.
Things I Love this October:
~ Campbell McGrath writes: poetry is not going to save anybody’s life... (Well, until it does. I adored this poem in the Kenyon Review.)
~ Watching tourists try to recreate the Beatles' album cover" The Abbey Road Crossing Cam (real time)
~ The secret coffee drink many in Seattle haven't even heard of called the "Flat White."
~ 5 minute interview with new MacArthur Genius Grant Winner, Terrance Hayes
(Here's a photo I took of Terrance back in 2010, La Conner, Washington)
~ Our Halloween Tradition: Watch "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe acted out by The Simpsons (a great way to share Poe & this poem with kids!)
~ 4 Sister, 40 Years of Yearly Portraits... beautiful visualization of age and life.
~ What one woman does with a Sharpie to her husband's car (spoiler alert: she's not mad at him).
~ Richard Blanco, our Inaugural Poet, has a new poem-video celebrating the love and freedom to marry for same-sex couples called "Until We Could."
~ Fire On Her Tongue: An Anthology of Contemporary Women Poets now in PRINT and features over 70 of the best women poets writing today.
~ More from my series of "Poet Calling Cards" (paging Mr. Prufrock, Mr. J. Alfred Prufrock...)
Wishing you all a dazzling fall where mermaids sing to you and you dare eat a peach.
xo,
Kells
